In celebration of World Video Art Day, the Video Artist Network Lagos would like to invite you to a screening of curated works from the Centre for Contemporary Art, Lagos library, to be held at 2:00pm 22nd June.

Work selected will cover fashion, performance and Identity featuring work by Jelili Atiku, Sabina Maria Van Der Linden, LucFosther Diop and an array of international and local artist work.

Drinks, light snacks and an opportunity to discuss works further with curators and Van Lagos team Emeka Ogboh, Jude Anogwih and Oyinda Fakeye.

Jay-Z tore it up at Glastonbury on the weekend, silencing critics such as Noel Gallagher who proceeded to rubbish Jay-z’s selection as the headliner. I read and laughed as people wrote into London papers saying how s**t Jay-Z was. What exactly is an "Afropolitan"?

The little downstairs dancefloor swells with smiling, sweating men and women fusing hip-hop dance moves with a funky sort of djembe. The women show off enormous afros, tiny t-shirts, gaps in teeth; the men those incredible torsos unique to and common on African coastlines. The whole scene speaks of the Cultural Hybrid: kente cloth worn over low-waisted jeans; ‘African Lady’ over Ludacris bass lines; London meets Lagos meets Durban meets Dakar. Even the DJ is an ethnic fusion: Nigerian and Romanian; fair, fearless leader; bobbing his head as the crowd reacts to a sample of ‘Sweet Mother’.
